My new Hyosung Avitar
The saga begins

12/30/05

I've been monitoring the PDA Hyosung Forum for the last few weeks trying to get a sense of what this bike is all about. The pictures and statistics really got my juices flowing. The lines of this bike are stunning and the performance everything I want in a bike. The reviews are very positive and Hyosung seems serious about cracking the USA market. This is a lot of motorcycle for $6,100.00. It is costing $7,281.46 out-the-door after all the charges and taxes.

Being such a new product in the USA, it took a little doing to track down a dealer within striking distance of me. I located Northbay Motorsports and Marine in Santa Rosa, CA . They are one of the ever increasing outlets who signed up to be
new Hyosung dealers in the States. I was contacted two days after my initial email inquiry by Larry Ceniceros, a NM&M salesman. He said they had two GV650s, a silver and a black (actually a very dark metallic blue). I told him I was interested in the black one and would be up the next day to take a look.

Man, what a beauty! This bike fits me like a glove. The workmanship is first rate and the fit-and-finish are on par with the Big Boys. I pick it up Monday and will be ordering the windscreen at that time. We'll see how available the accessories and parts are.
Here are some pictures of my bike of the showroom floor.

I picked up my bike today. I completed the paperwork and ordered a windscreen in short order. My brother came with me to drive my car home. We headed out in a steady pouring rain that lasted the whole 2 hour, 100 miles, maiden voyage. The bike handled well and had lots of power. Now all I need is some nice weather, a few mods, a little tweaking, and some free time to enjoy this new bike.

I've had the bike less than 24 hours and I'm already cutting and welding on it. The first thing I wanted to do
, because of my short legs, was to move the pegs to the rear position. I have a write-up in the Mods section. While I had the radiator cowling off, I noticed two issues. It is scuffed and cracked in the lower right area. Also it got sandblasted by the water/grit thrown off by the front wheel. I'll repair and paint it rather than try to get a replacement from the dealer. It official, I now have a used bike!

I started work on my new rear carrier rack system. The OEM rear backrest/rack will not work for me because I want to mount a Givi box on the stern. I only had time to buy the materials and make a template for the side brackets. I've started an article on my Mods page. Here is a picture of the bracket template.

I have been looking for a GV 650 service manual. Here is a link to the pdf manual. I've also included an Excel Maintenance Record Spreadsheet. Click on this button.

My Cobra Swept Floorboards arrived yesterday afternoon. They are soooo beautiful! I also finished the rear carrier rack, so installed both the rack and floorboards. I'll have complete write-ups soon. Here is a picture of today's projects.

As I was heading out to have my bike's first service done, I noticed that my left mirror ferrule had broken. I returned home and removed it. I'm glad I ordered a replacement set of mirrors last week. They should be here any day. This is one place that plastic should not have been used!

My windscreen arrived yesterday. I installed it today and it looks great. It has a nice blue/purple tint. It is small, but blocks enough of the wind blast, on my chest, to make riding at Highway speeds comfortable.

I've installed my new mirrors. These are what should have come stock on the bike to begin with. More pictures in the Mod section.
