This ride begins
northeast of the Greater San Francisco Bay Area in the small delta town
of Rio Vista. The major landmark has to be the Hwy 12 drawbridge
crossing the Sacramento River. We will meet at a small parking area at
the southwest end of the bridge. There is a sign that says "Rio Vista
Riverbank Fishing Access" at the entrance. As this is a
bit-of-a-distance for those of us in the South Bay, let's meet here at 10:00.
Follow the
arrows depending on which direction you come from.
We start out heading
north on River Rd. A few
miles upriver, we cross using the Ryer
Island Ferry. This is the first of two Ferrys we will use. They
are free-of-charge and hold 4 cars or 6 - 8 motorcycles. We may need to
cross in two shifts. From here we head north on 84 then right on 220.
This brings us to our second Ferry crossing to Grand Island Rd. Continuing
north, we connect with the Victory Hwy.
eventually turning into South River Rd.
After we pass through Clarksburg,
we cross the river on one of the many drawbridges to the town of Freeport. We will stop here for
lunch at the Freeport Bar and Grill.
After lunch, we
head south along the east side of the river on 160. This will take us
by numerous small towns and river resorts. We'll stop in Locke for a break. This is an old
Chinese river town, that still has much of the old decor and charm.
We'll also cruise down Main Street of Isleton
before reaching the Hwy 12 bridge into Rio
Vista.
This river ride
is only about 65 miles in length, but is a very pleasant way to spend a
Sunday afternoon.
