I
got the idea for this ukulele after buying a Little
Martin LXM Koa model guitar (this guitar has never seen a piece of
Koa wood). This instrument has amazing volume and tone for a $279.00
steel 6 string guitar. I used an inspection mirror to look at the
internal structure and discovered that it is essentially a "Formica"
and plywood guitar. It uses The Formica like material for the
soundboard, back, and sides. The neck and end-blocks are of high-grade
plywood material. It does use regular Spruce for cross bracing and has
a real Rosewood fretboard. The action and feel are classic Martin.
This gave me the idea to use some leftover material from my recent
kitchen re-modeling for a ukulele. This is my first attempt at building
a uke, so if it is a dismal failure that's OK. Better to learn on cheap
scraps than expensive hardwoods.
